The YKI Swedish writing test
The YKI Swedish writing test (skriftlig framställning, intermediate level) asks for three different kinds of short texts, usually an informal message, a more formal message and an opinion text. Here is what each one needs, phrases that work in Swedish, and a model text for each.
How the writing part works
- You write three texts of different types. The official framework names examples such as a message, a letter, an opinion text, a complaint or an application.
- The tasks are guided: each one describes a situation and lists the points your text must include. Some tasks also give you material to react to, such as a notice or an advert.
- Raters check that every point is there, and how clearly and correctly you write. Leaving out a point costs more than a small grammar mistake.
- Plan your time. The writing part usually gives you about 55 minutes for all three texts. A simple plan: about 15 minutes for each message and 25 for the opinion text. Finish all three — an unfinished text costs more than a plain one.
- Writing is normally done with pen and paper in a classroom. In November 2026 the Finnish National Agency for Education is piloting a digital intermediate test in Swedish on a computer at a few test centres; the tasks are similar. Check the registration page for the format of your test.
For the test parts, grades and citizenship rules, see our guide to the YKI Swedish test. Writing is in two of the three subtest pairs accepted for citizenship, so it is worth practising.
1. Informal message — informellt meddelande
A message to a friend, neighbour or colleague you know well: thank, invite, apologise, ask or suggest something.
2. Formal message — formellt meddelande
A message to a company, an office, a landlord or a school: complain, ask for information, apply or cancel something.
Tip: put the facts first (who you are, where, since when), then the problem and how it affects you, then exactly what you want. A polite question with Kunde ni…? or Skulle ni kunna…? fits well.
3. Opinion text — insändare
A short text for a newspaper, a website or your housing company about an everyday or social question.
A plan that always works: your opinion (jag tycker att) → two reasons (för det första, för det andra) → the other side (å andra sidan) → a conclusion or suggestion (därför, sammanfattningsvis).
Grade 3 or grade 4?
According to the official level descriptions, a grade 3 writer produces simple, connected text on ordinary topics that is mostly easy to understand, even if some expressions are unclear. A grade 4 writer handles both private and semi-formal texts, explains their point of view more fully and clearly keeps formal and informal style apart.
In practice the step up is often about linking ideas and giving reasons. Compare:
Words like eftersom, men, därför, dessutom and till exempel make your text flow without needing difficult grammar.
Check before you finish
- Is every point from the task in your text?
- Do the greeting and ending fit the reader — Hej and Hälsningar for a friend, Bästa… and Med vänlig hälsning for an office?
- Verb in second place: I går köpte jag, not I går jag köpte. This also applies after a sub-clause: När jag kom hem, såg jag…
- Inte before the verb in a sub-clause: eftersom jag inte har fått något svar.
- En or ett, and an adjective that matches: en ny maskin, ett stort problem, nya böcker.
- Do not copy whole sentences from the task — use your own words.

FAQ
How many texts do I write in the YKI Swedish writing test?
Three texts of different types, for example an informal message, a formal message and an opinion text. Each task tells you the situation and the points your text must include.
Do I write the texts on paper or on a computer?
Usually with pen and paper in a classroom. In November 2026 a digital intermediate test in Swedish, taken on a computer at the test centre, is being piloted at a few test centres. The registration page shows which format your test uses.
How can I practise YKI writing on my own?
Write answers to YKI-style tasks within a time limit, then check them point by point. Feedback on your own mistakes — such as word order and en or ett words — helps more than reading grammar rules.
Practise this in YKI Coach: YKI-style tasks with real exam timers, your own answer corrected and an estimated grade in about 30 seconds.
Grades in the app are automatic estimates for practice and can differ from your real exam result.
