The YKI Finnish writing test

The YKI Finnish writing test (kirjoittaminen, intermediate level) usually has three short texts: an informal message, a more formal message and an opinion text. Here is what each one needs, phrases that work, and a model text for each.

How the writing part works

  • Each task describes a situation and lists the points your text must include. Raters check that every point is there, and how clearly and correctly you write.
  • Leaving out a point costs more than a small grammar mistake. Tick the points off before you finish.
  • Write for the reader in the task: a friend, a company, a newspaper. Choose your greeting, tone and ending to match.
  • Plan your time. The writing part usually gives you about 55 minutes for all three texts. A simple plan: about 15 minutes for each message and 25 for the opinion text. Finish all three — an unfinished text costs more than a plain one.

1. Informal message — epävirallinen viesti

A message to a friend, neighbour or colleague you know well: thank, invite, apologise, ask or suggest something.

Task: Ystäväsi on kutsunut sinut syntymäpäiväjuhliin lauantaina, mutta et pääse. Kirjoita hänelle viesti: kiitä kutsusta, kerro, miksi et pääse, ja ehdota toista tapaamista.

Hei Sanna!
Kiitos tosi paljon kutsusta, olisi ollut kiva tulla juhliin. Valitettavasti en pääse lauantaina, koska minun täytyy olla töissä koko päivän. Harmittaa todella! Voisimmeko nähdä ensi viikolla? Voisin tarjota sinulle synttärikahvit vaikka keskiviikkona. Kerro, mikä päivä sinulle sopii. Pidä hauskaa juhlissa!

Useful phrases: Hei / Moi · Kiitos viestistä / kutsusta · Valitettavasti en pääse, koska… · Voisimmeko…? · Kerro, mikä päivä sopii. · Nähdään! / Terveisin

2. Formal message — virallinen viesti

A message to a company, an office, a landlord or a school: complain, ask for information, apply or cancel something.

Task: Ostit verkkokaupasta kahvinkeittimen, mutta se ei toimi. Kirjoita kauppaan: kerro, mitä ostit ja milloin, mikä vika on ja mitä haluat kaupan tekevän.

Hyvä asiakaspalvelu
Ostin verkkokaupastanne kahvinkeittimen 3. lokakuuta (tilausnumero 45812).

· Haluaisin… · Voisitteko…? · Kiitos etukäteen. · Ystävällisin terveisin

Tip: put the facts first (what, when, order number), then the problem, then exactly what you want. Polite Te forms (Voisitteko) fit well here.

3. Opinion text — mielipideteksti

A short text for a newspaper, a website or your housing company about an everyday or social question.

Task: Kaupunki suunnittelee, että keskustan kaduilla ei saisi enää ajaa autolla. Kirjoita mielipiteesi paikallislehteen.

Autoton keskusta on hyvä idea

A plan that always works: your opinion (minun mielestäni) → two reasons (ensinnäkin, toiseksi) → the other side (toisaalta) → a conclusion or suggestion (siksi, lopuksi).

Check before you finish

  • Is every point from the task in your text?
  • Do the greeting and ending fit the reader — Hei and Terveisin for a friend, Hyvä… and Ystävällisin terveisin for an office?
  • Objects after a negative verb in the partitive: en saanut vastausta.
  • Personal endings on every verb: minä haluaisin, te voisitte.
  • Do not copy whole sentences from the task — use your own words.

FAQ

What matters most in the YKI writing test?

Covering every point the task lists, in a text the reader can easily understand. Leaving out a point costs more than a small grammar mistake.

Can I write in an informal style?

Only when the task is informal, like a message to a friend. For a company, an office or a newspaper, use a neutral or polite style with a fitting greeting and ending.

How can I practise YKI writing on my own?

Write answers to YKI-style tasks within a time limit, then check them point by point. Feedback on your own mistakes — such as object cases and verb endings — helps more than reading grammar rules.

Practise this in YKI Coach: YKI-style tasks with real exam timers, your own answer corrected and an estimated grade in about 30 seconds.

Grades in the app are automatic estimates for practice and can differ from your real exam result.
