The YKI Finnish test, intermediate level

What the test looks like, how grades 3 and 4 work, which result you need for Finnish citizenship, and how to prepare. Checked against the official pages of the Finnish National Agency for Education and the Finnish Immigration Service on 17 October 2026. Preparing in Swedish? Read the Swedish test guide.

What the YKI test is

YKI (Yleiset kielitutkinnot, in English the National Certificate of Language Proficiency) is the official Finnish language test for adults. It is run by the Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus) and exists in nine languages, including Swedish and Finnish. People take it to show their language level for Finnish citizenship, for a job or for studies.

The test has three levels. Most people who prepare in Finnish take the intermediate level (keskitaso), because grade 3 at this level is what Finnish citizenship asks for. The Finnish test is by far the most popular YKI test, and popular dates fill up quickly.

Levels and grades

LevelGradesEuropean scale (CEFR)
Basic1 or 2A1, A2
Intermediate3 or 4B1, B2
Advanced5 or 6C1, C2

Every part of the test gets its own grade. At the intermediate level a part is graded 3, 4 or below 3. Grade 3 means you manage everyday situations and can talk and write about familiar topics clearly enough to be understood. Grade 4 means you do this more fluently and precisely, with a wider vocabulary, and can also handle less familiar topics.

The four parts of the test

All YKI tests have the same four subtests, done on one test day (the intermediate test takes about five hours with breaks):

  • Reading comprehension (tekstin ymmärtäminen) — short and longer texts such as notices, messages and articles, with questions about them.
  • Writing (kirjoittaminen) — usually an informal message, a more formal message and a short opinion text. You are checked on whether you cover every point the task asks for, and on how clearly and correctly you write.
  • Listening comprehension (puheen ymmärtäminen) — recordings such as phone messages, announcements, news and interviews, with questions.
  • Speaking (puhuminen) — about 20 minutes in a language studio. You hear or read a task, get a short time to prepare, and your answer is recorded. Tasks include telling about something, reacting in everyday situations, taking part in a conversation and giving your opinion. In the app we call them Kertominen, Reagointi, Keskustelu and Mielipide.

Reading and writing are done in a classroom; listening and speaking in a studio. The Agency is introducing digital tests step by step. In autumn 2026 it also piloted subtest days for the Finnish intermediate test: on 16 September 2026 you could register for only the writing and listening parts. Check the official page for the format of your test.

The YKI result you need for Finnish citizenship

For citizenship you need at least satisfactory skills in Finnish or Swedish. With the YKI test that means grade 3 or 4 in one spoken and one written part of the intermediate test. The Finnish Immigration Service accepts these pairs:

  • Speaking 3 or 4 + writing 3 or 4
  • Listening comprehension 3 or 4 + writing 3 or 4
  • Reading comprehension 3 or 4 + speaking 3 or 4

You must take all four parts on the same test day, but you may combine two YKI certificates from different days if together they make an accepted pair. In practice, writing and speaking matter most: one of them is in every accepted pair. YKI is one of several ways to prove language skills; the Finnish Immigration Service lists the others.

Registering for the test (rules in 2026)

  • Register on the official YKI registration page (yki.opintopolku.fi). Registration opens at 10:00, about two months before the test day, and closes about two weeks before. Popular dates fill up fast.
  • Finnish tests are held many times a year in many towns, but places run out quickly — be ready when registration opens.
  • The fee is paid when you register, and a paid registration is binding. Since 1 January 2026 you cannot move your registration to another date.
  • The fee is refunded only if you are ill (with a medical certificate), cancel by 8:00 on the test day and ask for the refund within two weeks.

Results and certificate

Results come about two months after the test day. Tests taken on or after 1 April 2026 get a digital certificate in My Studyinfo (Min Studieinfo); earlier tests got a paper certificate by post. A YKI certificate does not expire.

How to prepare for grade 3

  • Practise speaking against the clock. The speaking part is short and timed; most people lose points by freezing or running out of time, not by lacking words. Practise answering out loud within the real time limits.
  • Cover every point in writing tasks. A writing task lists what your message must include. Leaving one out costs more than a small grammar mistake.
  • Learn the everyday themes. Tasks come from everyday life in Finland: home, work, health, shopping, travel, services, free time and society.
  • Listen to everyday Finnish. Phone messages, announcements and Yle Selkouutiset (news in easy Finnish) are close to what the test uses. Spoken Finnish (puhekieli) is also fine in the speaking part.
  • Get feedback on your own answers. Knowing which mistakes you actually make is faster than reading grammar rules.

YKI Coach lets you practise all of this in Finnish: 456 speaking and writing tasks in YKI style, listening with natural Finnish voices, and words and grammar for the YKI themes. You get an estimated grade and your own answer corrected in about 30 seconds.

Grades in the app are automatic estimates for practice and can differ from your real exam result.

Frequently asked questions

What YKI result do I need for Finnish citizenship?

At least grade 3 in one spoken and one written subtest of the intermediate test in Finnish or Swedish. The accepted pairs are speaking and writing, listening comprehension and writing, or reading comprehension and speaking. You can combine two YKI certificates from different test days.

Can I take only some parts of the Finnish YKI test?

Normally all four parts are taken on the same day. In autumn 2026 the Finnish National Agency for Education piloted subtest days for the Finnish intermediate test, where you could register for only one or two parts. Check the official page for current dates.

What happens if I do not reach grade 3?

Each subtest is graded separately. A subtest that does not reach the intermediate level is marked below 3; the other subtests keep their own grades.

How long does it take to get the YKI result?

About two months after the test day. Tests taken on or after 1 April 2026 get a digital certificate in My Studyinfo. The certificate does not expire.

Can I move my YKI registration to another date?

No. Since 1 January 2026 a paid registration can no longer be moved. The fee is refunded only with a medical certificate, if you cancel by 8:00 on the test day and ask for the refund within two weeks.
