The YKI Swedish speaking test
The speaking part (muntlig framställning) of the intermediate test is short, timed and recorded. Here is how it works, the four kinds of tasks with an example of each, and what makes the difference between grade 3 and grade 4.
How the speaking part works
- It takes about 20 minutes and is done in a language studio with headphones and a microphone. There is no examiner in front of you; your answers are recorded and assessed later.
- For each task you hear or read the instructions, get a short time to prepare (often about a minute, a little longer for an opinion), and then a fixed time to speak. In conversation tasks you get only a few seconds for each reply.
- When the time is up, the recording moves on whether you have finished or not. Keeping going matters more than perfect grammar.
The four kinds of tasks
In the app we call them Berätta, Reagera, Dialog and Din åsikt. The examples below are our own and show the kind of task you can expect; they are not taken from a real test.
1. Berätta — tell about something
You talk for a minute or two about your own life or experience: a trip, your work, a typical weekend, a place you like.
Tip: use time words (först, sedan, på eftermiddagen, till sist) to give your answer a clear order, and end with one sentence about why or how you feel.
2. Reagera — react in a situation
You hear short everyday situations and say what you would say: ask for something, apologise, complain politely, make a suggestion.
Task: Du har köpt en tröja, men den är för liten. Vad säger du i butiken?
”Hej! Jag köpte den här tröjan i förrgår, men den är tyvärr för liten. Kan jag byta den mot en större storlek? Kvittot har jag här.”
Tip: greet, say the problem, say what you want. Polite phrases such as Skulle jag kunna…? and Ursäkta, men… make a 3 sound like a 4.
3. Dialog — take part in a conversation
You hear one side of a conversation, often on the phone, and answer each line in a few seconds. You may see notes telling you what to say.
Task: Du ringer till en tandläkarmottagning för att boka tid.
Mottagningen: Tandläkarmottagningen, god morgon.
Du: God morgon! Jag skulle vilja boka en tid. Jag har ont i en tand.
Mottagningen: Passar det på torsdag klockan tio?
Du: Tyvärr jobbar jag då. Finns det någon tid på eftermiddagen?
Mottagningen: Klockan fyra på fredag?
Du: Ja, det passar bra. Tack så mycket!
Tip: answer the question you heard, then add one detail. If you do not catch a word, a short reply such as Förlåt, kan du upprepa? is better than silence.
4. Din åsikt — give your opinion
You get a statement or question about everyday life or society and speak for about two minutes about what you think.
Task: Ska man få använda mobiltelefon i skolan? Vad tycker du?
”Jag tycker att mobiltelefonen inte borde användas på lektionerna. Det är lätt att tappa koncentrationen om man får meddelanden hela tiden. Å andra sidan kan telefonen vara ett bra hjälpmedel, till exempel när man söker information eller använder en ordbok. Därför tycker jag att läraren ska bestämma när telefonen får användas. På rasterna kan eleverna få använda den fritt. Sammanfattningsvis är telefonen bra, men bara med tydliga regler.”
Tip: a simple plan works every time — your opinion, one reason, the other side (å andra sidan), and a conclusion (sammanfattningsvis).
What grade 3 and grade 4 sound like
| Grade 3 | Grade 4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Task | Does what the task asks, in simple terms | Does it fully, with details and reasons |
| Fluency | Keeps going, with some pauses | Speaks fairly smoothly and links ideas |
| Vocabulary | Everyday words, some repetition | Wider range, more precise words |
| Grammar | Mistakes, but the meaning is clear | Fewer mistakes, also in longer sentences |
| Pronunciation | Understandable, even with an accent | Easy to follow |
This is a simplified summary in our own words of the general B1/B2 levels, not the official assessment criteria.
Common mistakes
- Stopping when time is left. If you finish early, add an example or a reason.
- Word order after a time word. In Swedish the verb comes second: På kvällen lagar jag mat, not På kvällen jag lagar mat.
- Answering a different question. Listen for the key word — när, varför, vad tycker du — and answer that.
- Memorised answers. Raters hear when a text does not fit the task. Learn useful phrases, not whole answers.
- Too quiet or too fast. Speak a little slower than feels natural, close to the microphone.
Practise these four task types with real exam timers in YKI Swedish Coach. Speak your answer and get an estimated grade, your own words corrected, a “one level up” version and a fuller model answer — in about 30 seconds.
Grades in the app are automatic estimates for practice and can differ from your real exam result. Speaking needs Chrome or Edge on a computer or Android phone.
